CountaBill — read your slips, not your bank account
A free budgeting app for iPhone, built in South Africa by Logical Solutions Innovations (Pty) Ltd.
Most budgeting apps ask you either to link a bank account or to type in
every purchase. CountaBill does neither. You photograph the till slip and
the app reads it back line by line, so a R847 shop at Woolworths becomes
the R500 of mince, the bread and the milk — not one opaque total. Amounts
are in South African Rand.
It never asks for a bank login. There is no
open-banking connection, because the app reads printed receipts rather
than account feeds. It is free: no adverts, no subscription, no in-app
purchases.
What it does
- Receipt scanning — extracts the merchant, date and every line item, with a confirmation screen so you can fix anything before saving.
- Budgets — per-category limits that follow either the calendar month or your pay day.
- Income and debit orders — so the headline figure is what is genuinely left, not a bank balance that this month's orders have not hit yet.
- Bill splitting — tag individual products on a slip to another person; a restaurant mode passes the phone around the table one diner at a time.
- Meals — build a meal from ingredients already scanned and get a real per-portion cost.
- Events — fence off a holiday so one unusual week does not make an ordinary month look broken.
- Fuel tracking — log fill-ups for consumption and cost per distance over time.
- Price comparison — track an item across stores by unit rate, so weighed goods compare fairly.
- Warranties — attached to a specific item on a slip, not just to the receipt as a whole.
- South African specifics — ZAR formatting, a SARS tax calculator, and local retailer names.
Privacy
Receipt text extraction uses Google Gemini on the paid API tier, which
contractually prohibits training on the submitted data. Price-sharing and
model-training consents both default to off and are independent of each
other; crash reporting defaults on and can be switched off. Data is
written to the phone first and synced later, and there is a guest mode
that needs no account at all.
CountaBill is a personal record-keeping tool. It is not a registered
Financial Services Provider under FAIS, not a registered credit provider
under the NCA, and it does not give financial advice.
Availability
The app is still being built. As of 27 August 2026 the App Store build
is with Apple awaiting approval, so it cannot be downloaded yet.
